This just reminds me of the frustration of never having beat Xenogears. Every single time I played through the game I would get to some sort of sand themed town/city, where there was some sort of tournament going on. And just before the tournament (or partway through the tournament) there was a town break, where you can run around the city and finish up whatever you still needed to do before the Big Stuff. I would walk around to every square inch of the city and talk to every single NPC, but I could never find or trigger the scene that lets you progress.

Part of me wants to I’m Proof Daddy Doesn’t Fish All The Time fire up the game and go through it again right now. After all, I finally got around to beating FF8 that way a few years back, and found it satisfying (I could never beat it originally because the game would always lock up my PS1 when shifting between Discs 3 and 4, when you go to the moon).But I’m not sure about Xenogears. I’d either feel a deep sense of satisfaction, or end up 10 times more pissed off than I was in any of the previous playthroughs. And I’m not entirely sure which way it would go.
