If I let my hair grow over a week or two I have to break out the clippers and shave it down first. After I lather up I shave downwards with the grain making sure I rinse the blade every 3 or 4 strokes. This stage doesn’t need to be perfect. I then re-lather my scalp (only a tiny bit of foam needed) and then I shave against the grain using my free hand to feel for any missed parts. Since my ‘with the grain’ step removed most of the stubble I don’t need to rinse my blade more than a few times when going against the grain.
